Hand me the Glitter Tissues

Oh my!  I didn't think there was going to be a sadder results show than when Rory & Erin left.  I actually had a river running down my face when Jason & Kristina and Robbie & Ola were up with Claudia.  And it didn't stop until after the show finished.  It was very gracious of Robbie & Ola to be so accepting and realistic of their standard in comparison to the others.  I felt for them when Kristina was so upset.  Also felt for Kristina to be so upset.  And then Jason was such a team-member.  It really was a whole lot of love!  I'm almost glad I'm going abroad the next 2 weeks and missing the shows as I don't think I'll be able to cope watching it live.

Predictions for next week:  I think Holly will/should leave.  I'm glad she loved the Paso but she really doesn't have the passion for the rest of it.  Alex is the weakest dancer left but she has the heart.

P.S.  Have to mention that Harry crying because he got through was the start of my sniffles.

Week 10 - Movie Week!

Robbie & Ola   7 - Quickstep  (Reservoir Dogs)

Harry & Aliona 9 - Rumba  (Robin Hood)

Alex & James 8 - American Smooth  (Pretty Woman)

Holly & Artem  9 - Paso Doble  (Zorro)

Jason & Kristina 10 - American Smooth (Singing in the Rain)

Chelsee & Pasha 9 - Jive (Shrek)

My vote goes to Jason & Kristina.  Definitely my favourite performance of the evening and I thought Jason was the best of the celebrity performers.    I perhaps would have given him 9 1/2 rather than 10 but he was the best.  I think the judges were misleading in their comments making me think they were also going to award him a 10.  I think they were saving their 10's for Chelsee.  Robbie's quickstep was very light-footed and it is very impressive where he has come.  Alex's American Smooth was beautiful but a little stiff.  Holly's Paso was great but I agreed with Craig.  Chelsee's jive was also great but I thought she jumped all her chasses turning back into the 'disco kid' for parts of it.  Harry's rumba was also very good.  He suited the music track.  I was looking out for a pigeon-toed left foot but I didn't notice it.   Well done all - it is a tough competition!  Robbie & Alex are the two weakest dancers now so I think it's probably ok for one of them to go tonight.

Strictly Come Brendan

What an opening!  Loved the black/white costumes.. and fabulous performance from Brendan, Natalie, Pasha and Katya.  I couldn't take my eyes off Brendan & Natalie.  I've now watched it 3 times in the last few minutes!

How awful were those dancers with that singer dude?????   It just makes you realise how wonderful Ballroom dancers are.. their training is so sophisticated and performance so elegant.  Those dancers just looked like they were out of a club (I suppose that was probably the point but they looked terrible).  Perhaps men will disagree with me but I thought their attempts to be sexy failed.  Feel free to disagree.

Lens Lens!   YEAH!  I saw Brendan singing... but great to see he actually WAS singing and WELL!!!!  He really is a performer (only slightly biased maybe?).  I say it all the time.. but he just wants to dance and perform and it shows that he dances from within.  Love it!

Ola's slow-mo was also very funny!  The swingathon was great for morale and competitive spirit.. the whole set up and the way they left the floor reminded me of 'Grease'.

Movie Night!  Sounds great and I loved the VT with them all... particularly Robbie & Craig at the end!

Very pretty Viennese Waltz with Anton & Erin.  Lovely fleckerl arrangement - very impressive.  Shame it was over so quick!

Oh my...  I have to admit I knew who was going out.. but it doesn't make it any easier when you see it on the TV.  One of the saddest endings.  Crying almost much as when Rory left.  I feel greatly for Robin who must have been so gutted that he wasn't there and so emotional to be speaking on the phone.  Brendan is such a gentleman too, standing back and giving Anita and Robin the praise and credit.. and how gracious Anita was.  Why does this show make me cry so much????   I can only put it down to my own love of Ballroom dancing.. it's really indescribable how you feel when you dance Ballroom well and with feeling.  You dance with your heart and your soul and it feels amazing.

Bring on Movie Week... and we wonder who Brendan will be dancing with next week :)  If he's not in the studio it will be a big loss to the show..  just seeing him in Tess's area with his enthusiasm and support for everyone helps make the show.

Until next week.....

Week 9 - Back Home

Only 7 couples left.. and a swing-a-thon tonight!

Anita & Brendan 7 - Cha Cha
I can't tell you how pleased I was to know that Brendan was dancing ANOTHER week!  Lulu who?  I have loved the "Rent-a-Pro" banter this week and LOVE that Brendan is being portrayed as that knight in shining armour.  It's wonderful to see someone with as much energy and love for dance as he has.  Ok, enough about Brendan and let's look at the Cha Cha.  I though Anita portrayed the Uptown Girl well and Brendan gave her plenty of opportunities to shine and be shown off.  I think all the judges were pretty spot on (this week I did listen to the judges before writing my blog).  She does need to straighten her legs on all her steps but I thought it looked like she was making a good attempt to do that (if failing).  There has rarely been a celebrity who can straighten their legs when doing cha cha.  Perhaps earlier in the competition I would have given this dance an 8 but I'm being a bit harsher now.

Holly & Artem  9 - Foxtrot.
I liked the modern approach to the start of the foxtrot then Iplayer froze so I'm having to wait before writing the next part of my blog.  Ok.. managed to watch it.  Holly did great here.  She suited the style that Artem choreographed and appeared to be really trying to get into the mood of the dance.  I hate to say that something still seemed to be slightly lacking and I think it's possibly to do with her own love for the dance.. she doesn't come across as really loving the dance and I think it shows.  She's good at it.. but I don't think she has a passion inside her for doing it.

Alex & James  8 - Charlston

(Wish other people would stop watching Strictly on Iplayer.. I'm sure that's why it keeps stopping.  I'm never going to get to sleep tonight!)
Yeah!  Finally got to watch it!  What a great track!  (Me & My Baby from Chicago)  I loved the energy and comedy in this routine.  I liked the swimming lift.  The basic charlston could have had more swivel (but a hard thing to do).  I loved Alex's walks near the beginning of the routine and I thought Alex really suited the dance.

Robbie & Ola 6 - Samba
They've done it again.  I want to watch this again.  Loved the music.. loved the enthusiasm.  Great twist at the end with the strip to the football shorts.  Terrible flat feet and a really cringeworthy section just before the last section where all you could see was plonky feet..  but despite that.. I would rather watch this dance again then some of the others already seen tonight.

Chelsee & Pasha 8 - Argentine Tango
Some very fancy footwork.  Very tricky moves and all performed soundly.  Something about the dress didn't seem to suit Chelsee though it did look nice.  It was definitely lacking in performance and looked like a comedy at the end when she started laughing.  If she could sort out her acting ability then that dance would have been amazing.  (She did need to point her toe on one of the flicks).

Jason & Kristina  9 - Charlston
Excellent.  Brilliant performance.  Slight timing issues (the flicks weren't quite together).  Jason is definitely on top form tonight.

Harry & Aliona  9 - Quickstep
Such light feet.  Great speed.  Lovely top half and yes there was sway!  He really looks sophisticated.  I did agree with Craig about the sickled foot but he's a beginner and he did a fabulous dance like that!

SWING A THON
1 point - Robbie & Ola
2 points - Holly & Artem
3 points - Anita & Brendan
4 points - Jason & Kristina
5 points - Chelsee & Pasha
6 points - Alex & James
7 points - Harry & Aliona

Week 8 - Wembley

Robbie & Ola    6 - Salsa

This was a great opening but not a great dance.  It was entertaining and the lifts were impressive but the salsa was terrible.  It looked like Robbie was jumping around as if it actually was a football match.  I appreciate the occasion but in terms of dancing it wasn't good.  I did however really enjoy the performance and enthusiasm and I'd happily watch it again!   Great track.

Alex & James  8 - Tango

Excellent Tango and such a hard dance to perform at this Arena with the setup of the stage/set.  I hope they get the votes as this is a hard dance to do to make it look showy and also performing so early in the show is against them too.

Holly & Artem   7 - Quickstep

Entertaining routine but I did feel that the actual Quickstep sections weren't quite together.  Holly's L arm needed to be lifted more for the posture and I felt like she was up on her toes and not using heels in al the right places (though I did see some).  The way the routine moved across the different stages was great but I do think that didn't help the continuity of the actual Quickstep.  I think this might be a running problem tonight.  I thought the costume was awful then I realised at the end they were trying to make her look like Amy Winehouse.

Anita & Robin   6 - Samba

Always a fabulous performance on top.  LOTS of Samba content.  She looked gorgeous but it seemed like there were a few mistakes and untidy feet.  Parts were excellent but parts were messy.

Harry & Aliona    8 - Salsa

Anyone else waiting for Darren  & Jill to appear to do their jive?  So disappointing that the music distracted me from their salsa.  It sounded like a jive and because it was a salsa it seemed a bit slow.  I'd have liked to have seen the same routine to a more 'salsa'-like tune to see the difference.  The actual dance/lifts were great but not amazing.

Russell & Flavia   5 - Jive

Another spectacle.  Loved the cannon and the flying.  The jive was not good.  The kicks seemed to be behind time.  The feet weren't stretched.  The arms were very good and very well stretched.  The basic footwork was not good and there was no jive action.

Chelsee & Pascha   7 - Samba

Unfortunately back to a 'pop' style for a lot of that routine.  Chelsee's rhythm is very good and at times managed the samba steps very well.  I enjoyed the music and performance.

Jason & Kristina  8 - Jive

Oh he went wrong :(  Still kept smiling but he went wrong.  I was put off by Kristina not wearing Latin shoes yet Jason continued to wear heeled Latin shoes.  He was however very light on his feet and had an excellent rhythm.  Disappointed this wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be.

Week 7 (The week before Wembley)

Alex & James - 8 (Jive)

Interesting decision to wear trainers instead of ballroom shoes.  It made the whole appearance of the jive look more like a rock 'n' roll routine.  (and I know the two are closely relelated).  I was worried when I saw the doll at the beginning (remember Colin & Erin) but Alex really did go for it and particular sections she really looked like a dancer!  I'd have liked some neater flicks and I saw the mistake... but loved it as the opening to the show.  These two really are becoming some of my favourites.

Robbie & Ola -  7 (American Smooth)
Stop singing along Robbie!  Lovely smile.  Really good effort with the arms - they seemed smoother.. however the feet seemed a bit heavy.  I really think standing spins don't look good when they're not smooth.  Tends to look like a helicopter whizzing around.  I still think Robbie has so much potential and hope he makes it to Wembley next week.

Audley & Natalie  6 (Cha Cha)
What a beautiful dress Natalie has on!!!!  Audley has such a great personality and there was a great content of cha cha steps which were executed correctly with the correct timing but unfortunately at this stage of the competition the standard of technique does not match the other competitors BUT I did thorougly enjoy watching this performance.

Harry & Aliona  9 (Argentine Tango)
Another beautiful dress!  Excellent performance.

Jason & Kristina 7 (Viennese Waltz)
It all seemed a bit fierce and jumpy for me.  I understand him wanting to show more emotion after last week's comments but I think it was a bit much.  The basic Viennese steps seemed jumpy and each time they started to flow they broke into a fierce turn or position.  I wanted it to be much better than I thought it was.

Chelsee & Pasha  9 (Foxtrot)
So elegant!  Loved it best when they were in hold.  Chelsee held herself beautifully.  She stepped out, it all flowed.  I wished she'd smiled a little more but thought it was gorgeous.  Some of the footwork was suspect but hard to tell on the camera.

Anita & Robin 7 (Argentine Tango)
Pretty cool music and Anita really looks amazing for her age.  But I did feel that her legs were not stretched/locked when they should have been and feet not stretched when the legs were lifted.  It spoilt the look of the dance for me.   I liked Robin's choreography to the accents in the music.

Holly & Brendan (Artem)  8 (Rumba)
This dance did suit Holly and I did try to watch her as well as Brendan.  It was again a shame that her dress got caught in her shoe.  The dress again was so beautiful!  Her style was very smooth and she looked beautiful.  It must have been hard to switch partners this week but she did a great job.  The dance had a lot more potential and I do feel Holly has so much more to give than is coming out at the moment.

Russell & Flavia  7 (American Smooth)

Russell is such an entertainer.  Made me really smile.  Russell definitely has a "Russell-style" approach to Ballroom Dancing.  It's not perfect, it's not technically amazing... but it's so endearing to watch.

Best Dance of the Night - I think Harry & Aliona's Argnetine Tango

Couple to Leave - Audley & Natalie.

*SHOCKED*  By Len's language during his comments on Harry & Aliona.  I agree with Alisha - jetlagged?  Grumpy "Sod" (using his own language)

Week 6

Jennifer Grey!  Great to see her....but... No Ballroom Judge.. how will this week fair?

Lulu & Brendan   7 (Tango)

Being up first with the Tango isn't a great position to be.  And I fear for them.  Lulu is getting so much better but she lost her frame somewhat after making the mistake and it was very obvious to the camera-audience from the position they were in at the time.  It was a nice tango but I don't think it's going to get them many votes especially seeing as they are out first and may get forgotten about :(   On another note..  I LOVE Lulu's outfit.  Very classy and beautiful colours for her!  (Just watched it again..  forgot about the lovely  opening sequence up on the top stage.)

Audley & Natalie 7 (Viennese Waltz)

Very nice.  A slow Viennese Waltz which was manageable for Audley.  There was barely any rise and fall but there was a nice smooth rhythm.  A correct performance with that dashing smile and a solid top half.  I've awarded the same mark that I gave Lulu & Brendan but I feel that Lulu has lots more potential and that Audley seems to be at his peak.

Harry & Aliona 8 (Samba)
Hmm.. of course Harry has lots of potential.  Large parts of the routine he seemed to be hitting positions while Aliona danced around him which for me broke up the Samba rhythm too much.  His attempt at the basic steps was good and he was trying hard with the technique though he did look very slighly pigeon-toed on those basic steps and like he was concentrating too much on trying to get it correct instead of letting the rhythm really flow through his body.  Easier said than done I know.  Russell had the right idea last week with the samba rhythm and also Lulu a few weeks ago.  They both just let go and it looked natural.  Harry looked like he never let go.  Having said that..  he's a great mover and surely he'll stay for many more weeks.

Anita & Robin 8 (Charlston)
Fab set!!!  Lovely routine and executed very well.  A couple of moments where Anita slightly lost timing but the performance was great.  The music of 'I got rhythm' didn't seem to be the best charlston music but great to hear the audience clapping along.

Jason & Kristina  8 (Rumba)
Would like to give an 8 1/2 as I feel it was better than Anita & Robin but I know the rules.  I think he suffered slightly from the 'trying to get the technique correct' syndrome and lost some of the intensity.  I did think the connection was lovely between them  both and the song was gorgeous but I think there was just a little something lacking in feeling the music with the body all the way.  It's hard when you're trying to dance on the "2" in a rhythm that is unfamiliar to you and I think he did a great job.  (Loved the shirt!)

Alex & James 8 (Quickstep)
Another 8.  I'm a terrible judge today.  Everyone is getting the same marks.  Lovely light and bright quickstep.  Shame about the dress being caught but it didn't distract barely at all.  Loved the dress and the yellow underneath (and James looked rather swish in the grey too).  I was distracted  by the swinging ponytail - I don't think that was a good hair choice.  Overall, a great dance and I'd like to watch it again.

Robbie & Ola 7 (Waltz)
Another  beautiful pairing.  Very nice waltz.  Shame that in key moments the footwork wasn't good.  I literally grimaced at heels on a lockstep going forward.  The rise and fall looked good which was why I was surprised by the footwork errors.  I do think this dance could be really good with some more practise.  Robbie again has a lot of potential and I did enjoy it.

Russell & Flavia 6 (Paso Doble)
Good posture throughout and a good attempt.  Not sure I enjoyed the comedy aspect too much.  It must be a difficult decision for them to choose between going for an 'entertainment' routine or a classic routine.  I guess Flavia knows what Russell is capable of.  He seems to be fairly capable and is certainly a wonderful entertainer

Chelsee & Pascha  8 (Charlston)
It could have been a great dance but seemed slightly out of sync with each other.  Chelsee just seemed behind the beat a lot of the way through.  The dance steps had energy however and Chelsee is very capable.

Holly & Artem 8 (Jive)
This was a laid-back jive.  It suited Holly's laid-back attitude (that comes across on camera).  It wasn't a performance I'd want to see again but it worked.

Couple to leave:-  Audley & Natalie.  I like him but I think he's come to the peak of his performances.
Couple I think are in danger of leaving:  Lulu & Brendan :(
Performance of the night:- Alex & Jame's quickstep.

Week 5 - Halloweeeeeeeeen!

Much excitement! Halloween week last year was one of my favourite Strictly weeks ever!  It's great to have a theme.  Glad they're not doing a theme every week as I do like to see a classic dance performance too but it's great to have them thrown in there.  Well done producers!

Anyway, onto the show.  I annoyingly had to wait til about midnight to watch the show when it appeared on Iplayer and then managed to watch most of it last night before watching the remainder this morning.

Glad to see everyone taking part in the 'Adams Family' opening though it would have been amazing to have a Pro dance.. perhaps that'll come in the Results show tonight (*hoping*)

Onto the couples...

Russell & Flavia 6 Samba
The samba was not a dance of fear for Russell as it is for most of the celebrities.  He had a great bounce action, was demonstrating actual samba steps and it was just a big shame that he went wrong a few times.  It was a hard dance to do in Halloween week and I wondered how it could still be a 'party' dance but it was.  I throughly enjoyed the performance to 'Better the Devil You Know'.  Well done and fingers crossed for next week.

Chelsee & Pasha 8 Tango
I was with Bruce... I didn't notice the dress malfunction.  I had to rewatch the dance to see what the fuss was about.  I noticed that she started to look less comfortable towards the end but wasn't sure why.  So we'll not talk about that anymore.  the dance was strong and powerful.  It was a bit over the top, dramatically, but I suppose it is Halloween week so they were going for the performance aspect.  I think that the tango loses the tension when you start to really play it so forceful and strong but that's me being nitty-picky.  I would have prefered more subtleness.

Audley & Natalie 6 Jive
This guy does have swing and style up top.  I really enjoyed the performance.  It did look like he was struggling to move his feet fast enough for the steps but he did a passable job and I hope he is voted through to next week when he has more time to train.  It woudl be interesting to see how much better he could actually get.

Alex & James  7 Paso Doble
I loved the costumes.  Alex looked like Christine from 'Phantom of the Opera' and James made a good Dracula.  It was a good performance.  I liked James' idea of Alex using her skirt almost like a cape at the start of the routine though it did go on slightly too long for my liking but Alex may have needed that long to get into the role and get settled into performing alone.  There were some good actual Paso steps in the routine.  Alex still looked somewhat flimsy in some of her actions and nervy but she was really trying to hide that with a more confident performance.  I still believe she has lots of potential.

Holly & Artem 9 American Smooth (Black Swan)
Stunning costumes.  This was a beautiful show piece.  I wish it had been more Ballroom dancing as the opening section was really good but then it just went into a show routine which was fabulous.  A great achievement and I won't continue to moan about the lack of content as it was a great routine.  (However it may have been closer to a 10 if I'd seen more good ballroom)

Nancy & Anton 3 Rumba
I think this dance should have been Nancy's best hope but it failed unfortunately.  The dance steps looked plonky and she looked unfeminine throughout.

Harry & Aliona  9 Tango
This man is good!  I was swaying between an 8 and a 9 but his small tango section has pushed it up to a 9.  He had the flexed knees, his posture was fantastic and his performance was brilliant.

Robbie & Ola 8 Paso Doble
Loved the Michael Jackson element in this routine.  Robbie has so much oomph and potential.  He looks so eager to learn and Ola must be working so hard with him.  His walks weren't perfect style for Paso.. I think he needs to pull his posture up some more but I did enjoy it.

Anita & Robin 7 Tango
You can't say this performance wasn't dramatic but I didn't really enjoy it. Anita did do well and achieved a routine with lots of tango elements but I was distracted by the 'devilish' facial expressions.

Lulu & Brendan  7 Paso Doble
I loved their performance.  Great idea Brendan!  Lulu did it with such determination and great performance.  I want to give them more points but I do think her feet aren't as good.  I hope the technique improves each week as her confidence is growing each week.

Jason & Kristina 9 Quickstep
Excellent routine.  They  both gave us a great finale to the show.  I did suspect Jason had gone wrong slightly but it didn't distract from the routine.  I'd also like his elbows to be lifted to improve his posture some more.  His steps were fluent.  It was a light, 'bewitching' quickstep.  Loved it.  Definitely the couple to watch!

Top Couple tonight:-  Jason & Kristina's Quickstep
Routine I want to watch again (and have!) - Lulu & Brendan
Couple to leave - Nancy & Anton
Best Costumes: - Alex & James (very classic Halloween and fitting to the dance) and Holly & Artem (stunning)
Cutest VT - Audley's daughter being twirled by Audley.

I'd miss it like a limb

Floods of tears... I mean... FLOODS of tears....

Is there something wrong with me?  I knew he was in danger..  I didn't vote for him.  When someone has been affected that much by dancing it makes me so sad.  Not even sad... devasted.  I'm still in floods of tears while writing this.  I knew he was leaving (spoilers in the forums) but knowing didn't make it any easier.  I didn't realise how sad he'd be.  How sad Erin would be.  How sad I am knowing now that he loved dancing so much.  The moment Rory said "I'd miss it like a limb" to Claudia [when she asked him what he'd do if he wasn't going to be there next week] was the moment I started crying.

This love for Ballroom is something I share.  It's actually pretty hard to describe just WHY it is such a wonderful form of dance.  I dance just about every type of dance and if I had to pick one and only one to be able to do, it would be Ballroom.  (Still in floods of tears

Week 4 Scores

Rory & Erin  6 (Cha Cha)
Great attempt and he can obviously use his hips but the grinding and rotating made me grimace rather than be turned on.  Much preferred him doing Ballroom.

Nancy & Anton 4 (Paso Doble)
Walking... walking... and more walking.  Really not keen on Nancy's attempt at dance.

Lulu & Brendan 6 (Samba)
Absolutely loved the red costumes.  Loved the energy and performance.  Lulu's samba technique needed work but showed lots of promise.  I also liked the 'using of the stairs' up to the other pro's and celebrities..  it may have taken time out of the actual dance routine.. but it felt like they got support when they went up those stairs and then they came back down with warmth and love from their fellow competitors.(may be just me being a bit soppy!)

Chelsee & Pasha 8 (Quickstep - Sing Sing Sing)
Bright, bubbly.  I liked the airhostess theme.  Lots of energetic steps.  At times I would have prefered there to be more body contact but with all the jumps and charlston steps they were doing it was probably hard to maintain that.

Harry & Aliona 9 (Waltz)
The waltz was absolutely beautiful.  I didn't want it to stop and then they came out of hold.  I wanted more waltz.  I did like the story telling but the waltz was so good I wanted more.  I felt like I was cheated out of more exquisite waltz.

Sidenote:  I'm sorry Tess... I'm not a fan of your swirly purple dress.

Anita & Robin 5 (American Smooth)
Very clever camera effect with the black and white picture.
I did feel however that Anita looked nervous and was almost running and wobbly throughout the routine. Her smile is gorgeous so she's obviously used to performing but I thought the actual dancing wasn't really there tonight. There were several mistakes and it just seemed like she wasn't confident with what she was doing.

Robbie & Ola 7 (Jive)
So light on his feet during all the flicks and kicks.  Fabulous performance!  Really got into the 'love man' role!  Basic jive work was a great attempt.  There wasn't any hip swing in the basic steps but it was made up for in the lightness of feet and fabulous performance!  (Did part of Ola's dress come flying off - beads perhaps - when Robbie swung her skirt?)

Russell & Flavia 6 (Tango)
Good to see the actual tango steps in the routine.  I felt it was a bit too 'fantasy'.. I would have preferred more actual 'tango' performance during the middle section of the routine (stacatto/knees flexed/atmosphere) but I really enjoyed watching it as a show piece.

I'm waiting for Iplayer to watch the following dances as I got in from work after these guys had performed.  (I did see Audley & Natalie but wasn't watching them as I was attending to my cats.  They didn't understand that 'Strictly' was on and just wanted food!).  I'll edit my post when I've watched them.   (I've now edited the post and added my reviews below)

Jason & Kristina  7 (Paso Doble)
I liked their costumes.  They certainly looked the part of the Paso Doble.  I'm not sure what I didn't really like about it.. but it seemed a bit like a series of steps rather than a complete dance.  Almost like Jason was counting in his head.  There were moments where steps looked a bit skippy too.  It could have been the music - much as I like Queen the music seemed a bit repetitive which could have made the steps seem like they were danced repetitvely.  I can't quite put my finger on it.  Jason is certainly very talented and performed with conviction and aggression - this just wasn't a performance that thrilled me.  I'm sorry.

Alex & James 5 (Rumba)
Well if anyone could look gorgeous in a sheer catsuit it is Alex.  She looked stunning but in my opinion also looked quite self-concious.  She hit all her lines but I was just willing for her to really push down into the floor and use her hips.  The costume was very brave but I think perhaps something with a little bit more material may have given her the confidence to use those hips.  She also seemed to be struggling to move in the high heels.  It was like she was dancing on top of the floor instead of using the floor to aid her.  It is a tough dance and she did look good but it was more a case of 'picture' moments rather than dancing.  If it hadn't been a rumba, I would have marked higher.  I loved the 'Bolero' beginning.
Audley & Natalie 5 (Foxtrot)
What a beautiful dress Natalie wore!  This looked lovely.. but Audley's dancing of the foxtrot was only a 5 to me.  I did enjoy the performance and he looked very comfortable but I wanted him to step out some more and really feel the dance through his feet and legs.  His posture was very good and his smile was adorable.

Looking forward to next week's Halloween special!  Last year's one was so good so I hope this one lives up to expectations!  I do like the idea of themes.  I think it keeps Strictly fresh though I do hope they don't go away from the actual dances too much.

Couples who I think are in danger this week:-
Audley & Natalie, Rory & Erin, Nancy & Anton.

Couple who I think should leave:  still Nancy & Anton

Couple who surprised me the most this week: Chelsee and Pasha - didn't think she coudl produce a quickstep like that.  Was really surprised and thrilled.

My opinon on the rift between the judges and professional dancers that seems to be arising:-  It's a tricky one.  I can see why the professionals are frustrated by the seemingly constant references to their choreography (and I know I do it as well) but it does contribute to the celebrity's performance.  Their ability to choreograph for their particular celebrity really does come into play.  I suppose it's a bit like song choice on 'singing' shows.  The choice of song REALLY does make a difference as does the choice of choreography on Strictly.  I understand why it is hard for the judges not to comment on the choreography when it makes such a difference to the performance and I also understand why the professionals are upset that their choreography is being criticised when it seems that the focus should be on the 'dancing' ability of the celebrity.  I don't think there's anything wrong with talking about the choreography but perhaps the judges could focus more on the celebritiy's dance ability before taking the choreography into account.. perhaps more a 70/30% situation?  I think the pro's objections are more to when 'just' the choreography is being discussed and not the performance of the celebrity or when the choreography is deemed to be the downside to a performance.  Professional dancers/teachers follow a code of professional etiquette whereby we don't criticise other professional's work and support our fellow professionals.  I think perhaps some of the pros on Strictly feel that this practise is not being followed.  It's a tricky situation.

Bye to Dan & Katya

Well Dan was my choice to watch for potential but I don't find it a surprise that he left tonight.  It's that 3rd from bottom syndrome!  His Viennese Waltz was very stop-starty and he never really seemed to find his rhythm.  The standard as a whole was pretty great for week 2 so it is a tough bunch of celebrities to be up against.

Nancy & Anton would have been my choice to leave and surely they'll make an exit within the next few weeks unless Nancy shows a dramatic improvement and other people drop in standard.

Professional Performance - West Side Story
Lots of energy and great aspects of the original film choreography. Great Broadway theme week!  Bring on next Saturday!

Random note:  Claudia's eyeliner really was a BIT too far out, I couldnt' stop looking at it.  That was probably the intention?

Random thought:  Alex reminds me of Natasha Kaplinsky  (perhaps this will be James' year?)

Week 3 Scores - Broadway Week!

What a fabulous opening with "One" from one of my favourie musicals 'A Chorus Line'!  It was a lovely touch to have all of the celebrities come on at the end of the number.

And how lovely to hear "Sir Bruce Forsyth" announced!  Well deserved Sir Bruce!

Now here are my scores and opinions.

Holly & Artem - 7 (Tango - Cell Block Tango from 'Chicago')
I was curious to see this dance as I heard Holly say on It Takes Two that she hated musicals.  Their routine was from 'Chicago' one of my other favourite musicals.. this seemed to be inspired from the film version.  Holly's wig made her look very much like Catherine Zeta Jones who played the part of Velma in the film (On a side note... my two cats are called Roxie & Velma).  Now onto the dance...  as a whole piece, Holly played the part well and the dance routine was effective.  As a tango.. there was barely any content and what steps I saw seemed  to be done on the balls of the feet when going forward which made it look like she was trotting in stilettos and unable to manage the height of the shoes.  It was certainly strong and passionate but I do feel there should have been more tango content.  The music was perfect to do a tango to.  I marked 7 but this could have been higher if the tango section had been done with a better technique.  I do have to mention that she did deal very well when her dress got caught in her heel.

Dan & Katya - 6 (Viennese Waltz)

I had high hopes for Dan but this just seemed somewhat disjointed.  The Viennese Waltz should be a flowing dance yet it didn't seem to really start.  Lots of stopping.. and when it finally seemed like they were about to get a rhythm going they stopped again!  He seemed rather flat footed but there wasn't much chance for him to get into the rhythm of the dance.  His posture was quite nice and his leather waistcoat suited the music but I wish it had all had more flow.  It seemed like he was delivering steps rather than actually 'dancing'.  I do still believe he has the potential to do much better than this.

On a sidenote..  I write my reviews before listening to what the judges say on 'Strictly'.  (Felt I had to say this as the judges seem to be agreeing with me some of the time).

Anita & Robin - 8 (Jive)
Anita has a great smile!  Perfect for the jive and this had plenty of content and fit the 'Hairspray' theme.  The speed was a good one.  Often the jives are played super-fast and it is impossible for the celebrities to keep up but this slower speed meant that Anita got her steps in and was able to 'perform' the routine.  I enjoyed this performance and though she matched Robin well.

Alex & James - 8  (Viennese Waltz 'Memory' from Cats)
Oh this was beautiful.  A perfect routine for Alex from James.  I loved the subtlety of the 'cats' paws at the start and end of the routine.  In contrast to Dan & Katya's Viennese Waltz this flowed really well.. and even when they slowed down the momentum kept going.  Of course it would have been easier for James to lead Alex than for Katya to lead Dan so Dan is at a disadvantage there.  The dress was beautiful and I thought Alex did this the best she could have done at this stage in the competition.  She definitely has further to go!  My favourite performance so far.

Rory & Erin - 8 (Quickstep - Top Hat & Tails)
Oh I can't stop smiling.  What a great show!  I want to give Rory an 8 but I think it's more a 7.  Umm.. changed my mind... given him an 8.  Again, another great routine.  Well done to Erin!  It was just out of a Fred Astaire movie.  I loved the opening and end and loved that it was also a great quickstep.  Rory was very light on his feet and well in control of himself.  I think his back could have been straighter but this is only the 3rd dance!  He really got into character and delivered a very good quickstep.

Lulu & Brendan - 7 (Rumba - All I Ask Of You (Phantom))
Well I heard Brendan say on ITT that there wasn't much rumba content so I wasn't expecting much but there was a rumba 'look' to the routine.  I'd have liked Lulu to have walked with straighter legs to emmulate the rumba style more but she made a good attempt.  The song is beautiful and they both performed with emotion.  The dry ice effect on the dance floor was very apt for the 'Phantom' setting but not too great for watching their feet.  I thought Lulu's dress was perfect for their rendition of the routine.  Brendan's cape was actually the same as the capes my girls performed in tonight at our show in their 'Phantom of the Opera' ballet medley.  I liked the way he took the cape off and used it.  A good performance but still hoping for more as Lulu's confidence grows.
Extra note after watching the judge's comments:-  I did wonder if the 'lifts' rule applied to the 'Broadway' show as they did the lift and find it quite strange to see Len accepting the lift and Craig not!!!

Nancy & Anton - 5 (Tango)
Hmm.. what to make of this.  Loved Anton's jacket.  This was an ok performance.  It was quite striking but there was something missing that I can't quite put my finger on.  I was watching her feet and she seemed to be walking rather than dancing on the walks.. which I know sounds like a strange thing to say... but there are many ways to walk in a dance and I don't think she mastered the 'tango' walk.  But this was certainly better than the previous two performances.  It just didn't excite me.

Audley & Natalie - 5 (Quickstep - Too Darn Hot from 'Kiss Me Kate')
I love Audley's smile.  I love his natural groove but the performance didn't work for me tonight.  The dance also felt rather disjointed.  The first section of 'quickstep' worked well.  The second section went wrong which was sad as it was near the end of the routine.  He has a good fluid rhythm but I don't think the dance was great tonight.
Sidenote: liked the lights/projection at the back at the start of the routine with 'starring Audley & Natalie'.

Robbie & Ola - 6 (Tango - Gimme Gimme Gimme (Mamma Mia))
The passion in this tango was fiery.  I wanted Robbie to be the 'man after midnight'.  Ola did a lot of the work in this routine though.  She fiddled around him while he 'looked' the part but I dont' think that he competely was the part.  Really enjoyed the performance though.

Russel & Flavia 7 (Foxtrot - Don't Rain on My Parade)
Their advantage.. one of the best songs of the night.  Russell just loves this which makes me love it and makes me want him to go all the way!  There was a lot of foxtrot in this routine which he managed well and smoothly.  It was certainly more 'American movie' than elegant foxtrot but it had that showbiz finasse and he looked extrememly comfortable performing in that style.  I wanted to be up there dancing too.

Jason and Krystina 8 (Tango - I Will Survive (Pricilla)
Well that was possibly the campest and most vocal tango I've ever seen on Strictly. The section where Jason & Krystina had their backs to the judges was Jason's finest musical 'camp' performance and then it was straight into a classic tango with what looked like shouts and rather masculine sounds!  I feel Jason was using a lot of ball leads instead of heels but his posture for the tango sections was stunning and the routine was most enjoyable to watch.  Can you tell I'm loving 'Broadway' week?  (Love Jason's pink diamante collar)

Chelsee & Pasha 6 (Cha Cha)
I know she said she was going to tone it down.. but she was still dancing the cha cha as a 'disco' dance.  The leotard costume did her no favours as it showed off her un-latin-like legs.  A Latin dress may have helped disguise that somewhat.  She definitely can dance but as of yet she hasn't adapted the style to the correct Latin dance.  I actually suspect she will be better at the Ballroom dances as they're different to disco.

Harry & Aliona 7 (Jive - Greased Lightning)
As a show piece, this was a 9!  Fabulous!  Harry was a great 'Danny Zuko' but as a jive there was barely anything to judge. It's really hard to mark.  I think if there had been more jive it would have been great and I could have warranted giving him a 9 but I think I've got to be stuck on 7 because there was barely a step of jive in there and it's so sad because the routine was a great show piece.

Best Performance of the Night
The one I want to watch again is Jason & Krystina's tango - but I'll will him to walk with heel leads.

Most Entrancing Performance of the Night
Alex & James' Viennese Waltz

Makes me want to get up and dance too
Russell & Flavia

Goodbye Edwina & Vincent

A tear was shed...  no more dancing for Edwina :(

It's always heartbreaking for the professional to be the first to leave.. but gutting for a celebrity to leave who was enjoying it and wanting to learn more dancing.

I do think Anton actually looked disappointed that he wasn't the one to leave.  If that is the case I don't blame him as Nancy is not coming across very well on camera.

I was glad that Audley remained as he definitely didn't deserve to be in the bottom two.. and relieved Brendan & Lulu got through.

Week 2 Scores

Chelsee & Pascha (will check how his name is slept later) - Salsa.  My score - 7

For me it had lots of energy but was more like a "Disco" dance than a Salsa.  Chelsee has so much potential and it really seems to me that she has a 'disco' dancing past so she needs to learn how to ground her feet more and use the floor instead of bouncing on top of it.  She is one to watch!  (Loved the armography section)

Edwina & Vincent - Foxtrot (Or rather American Smooth).  My score - 4.

Very disappointing.  I don't like to criticise the professionals but this was more an American Smooth.  I guess it was an attempt to hide Edwina's dance ability in the foxtrot and to appeal to the voting public by adding props and making the routine more interesting and I guess I can understand Vincent's reasons for doing so as the actual foxtrot section wasn't very good.

Audley & Natalie - Salsa   My score - 6.

This actually had a fair amount of rhythm.  Personality was great!  I think Audley has potential to really move his hips.  He managed some quick step movements and arm movements but was let down by his flat feet and at times his lack of energy.. he did some very bad looking drag runs towards the stage as he headed there for the final section.. but it was a joy to watch.  (And a great track of music!)

Alex & James - Foxtrot.  My score - 7

I enjoyed this.  Alex looked most stunning at the start and end of the routine.  During the foxtrot she needed to lower her shoulders to correct the posture.  She seemed to be coming away from the floor with her feet so attention for me was drawn to some clumpy steps.. but she stepped out really well with James and really made a good attempt at the foxtrot.  Beautiful smile and gorgeous feather fan.  Shows promise!  (Loved the jewelled neck piece)

Dan & Katya - Salsa. My score - 7

I could REALLY like Dan I think.  Loved the VT of the tennis.  The Salsa itself for me seemed a bit bitty.  I liked the bits of salsa but they weren't linked together.. they seemed to be interrupted with lifts and poses.  I would have liked more continuity so that I could have seen Dan's rhythm some more.

Brendan & Lulu - Foxtrot.  My score - 6

Brendan could not have looked more swish.  The song lyrics "falling to pieces".. were what I was scared of Lulu doing through the routine.  It did seem like Brendan was carrying her around the floor and she seemed scared to lift her head up (I'm not surprised after forgetting her routine last week).  It was still a pretty tough foxtrot routine and I do think Brendan needs to simplify the choreography to help her along for the first few weeks.  The mirror was interesting but not sure it really added too much to the routine.  Hope Lulu gets some confidence back and can really start to learn to dance.  I would love her to do well as she is such a fabulous performer.  I think the Latin dances are going to suit her more if she can nail the choreography.  (In shock slightly after Brendan's forward roll to Tess!)

Holly & Artem  Salsa My score - 8

Very smooth and relaxed.  Enjoyable to watch (even though i didn't care for the music)

Rory & Erin Salsa.  My score - 7

Loved the music and the continuous salsa style.  Great shimmys!  Rory seemed a little flat-footed at times but really nailed the routine.  Looking forward to seeing more of Rory's dancing! I was close to giving an 8.

Robbie & Ola  Foxtrot  My score - 8
Wow!  What a surprise!  This was great!  Lovely stepping out of feet.  Good posture.  Excellent flow of movement.  Loved the solo at the beginning with an elegant quick-moving zig-zag from Robbie.  I was so impressed!  I'd like to watch it again.  Best dance of the night so far.  Almost feel like giving a 9.

Anita & Robin  Salsa.  My score - 5.
I'm not loving the dress.  Brave outrageous outfit but I don't think it worked for Anita for this dance.  It showed off too much of her legs which looked gangly throughout this dance.  Very little hip action though good content in the routine.  She smiled throughout and tried to give but I think nerves overcame her.

Jason & Krystina  Foxtrot  My score - 8
Jason has such a fabulous personality and is a great actor so it was no surprise that this foxtrot looked straight out of the movie.  The actual foxtrot section was almost correct.  He was trying with the correct footwork and trying with the posture but he did look stiff as he held his head up.  I'm sure he'll learn to relax more in future weeks.

Nancy & Anton  Salsa.  My score - 4
Oh dear.  This lady actually did try to perform with some style and the start was particularly effective.. but her feet got carried away during the routine and it didn't seem to be the correct steps.  Nancy seems to have potential but this was a messy performance unfortunately.

Harry & Aliona  Foxtrot  My score - 8
Lovely and smooth.  Harry needs to lift his head a little more to create a better frame but he stepped out really well and it was a good rendition of the foxtrot.

Russel & Flavia  Salsa   My score - 6
This is a difficult one.  I enjoyed it but also felt a bit awkward.  I didn't like the beginning.  I'd rather Russell had stayed serious.  He can move so he doesn't need to create comedy scenarios.  The music was a bit off-putting as it sounded more like a samba than a salsa hence the inclusion of samba steps into the routine.  There was a lot of good salsa in the routine but due to the speed of the music the steps weren't always finished off and it seemed like they had to allow several bars of the music just to catch up with the feet.  Russell needs to work on pointing his toes when his leg is up in the air too.  I think I was slightly disappiinted.  I originally gave a 7 but have changed to a 6.

My favourite routine suprisingly was Robbie & Ola's!  It's the one I'd like to see again.  I hate to say it but I think my choice for leaving would be Nancy.  I'd be happy for them all to stay until the final :)    Nobody should leave!

And it all begins again...

Another year of sparkle, excitement, tears and joy!

I've decided to start a blog this year in the hope of sharing the enthusiasm I have for the phenomenen that is Strictly Come Dancing!

3 weeks we have to wait now!!!!  3 whole weeks!!!!  But how exciting to keep seeing the snippets of the new cast and hearing the clips of the Strictly theme tune keep popping up on BBC.. just to keep us on our toes and get us that bit more excited for the new season!

It's a little early to form too much of an opinion from the launch show (I always like to give them a few weeks to settle down) BUT I have high hopes for Brendan & Lulu.  I think Lulu could be the first 'older' winner of Strictly.  She's got a fabulous personality and looks like she moves really well!  I'm also really interested in seeing how Rory Bremner manages.  Somewhere inside me I just feel that he could be REALLY good!  It may be in a dream world.. but we'll see!  I also think Russell Grant looked like he had good movement.  I just hope the judges don't give him too hard a time before he has even began!  Jason Donavan looked rather wooden (which I was surprised about) but I did like that he was practising and determined so maybe his determination will carry him through.  Audley Harrison, the boxer, looked rather tall.  If he can dance Ballroom with a straight back he could look like the graceful giant on the floor.  Chelsee Healey looked like she had a lot of movement and a good Latin look.  She stood out from the line of ladies in the group dance and I actually went back on Iplayer to see who is was that stood out.  Harry Judd looked cute and I'm sure will appeal to the younger girl viewers.. let's see if he has the movements to match.  In fact all in all it looks like a pretty good lineup.  Can't wait to see the first show!

3 WEEKS!!  We still have to wait 3 WHOLE WEEKS!
